SEA GRANT AWARDS ARCHIVE

Alaska Sea Grant

  • Alaska Sea Grant Education Services received both the Gold and Silver awards in this year's international Association for Communication Excellence (ACE) Critique and Awards Program, in the four-color, popular publications category. The 2008 Alaska Coastal Calendar, International Polar Year/Climate Change in Alaska theme, won the Gold, and the Field Guide to Sharks, Skates, and Ratfish of Alaska received the Silver. The same two publications also have won awards from the National Association of Government Communicators.
  • Alaska Sea Grant’s 2008 tide table books received the Silver Award from ACE for the graphic design of the cover.
  • Two Alaska Sea Grant publications were selected as Notable Government Documents for 2006, by the Library Journal. Winners were Common Edible Seaweeds in the Gulf of Alaska, by MAP agent Dolly Garza, and The Gulf of Alaska: Biology and Oceanography.
  • Three Alaska Sea Grant publications won awards in the National Association of Government Communicators Blue Pencil Awards Program. Sea Lions of the World won first place in the hardcover book category, the 2007 Alaska Coastal Calendar won third place in the calendar category, and the 2001-2006 Briefing Book took third place in the annual report category.
  • Dorothy Childers, a member of the Alaska Sea Grant Advisory Committee, was awarded a Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation, for her project "Climate Change in the Bering Sea." The Pew program annually awards five fellowships of $150,000 each, to advance solutions to the most pressing ocean problems.

California Sea Grant

  • Marsha Gear received a 2008 APEX award in the “Web & Intranet Site Content & Writing” category.
  • Leigh Johnson, Jamie Gonzalez, Cesar Alvarez (Cooperative Extension) received a 2007 APEX award in the "One-of-a-Kind Print Publications" category.

Connecticut Sea Grant

  • Peg Van Patten received a 2008 APEX award in the "Magazine & Journal, Design & Layout" category.
  • Peg Van Patten and Debra Schuler received a 2008 APEX award in the "One to Two Person-Produced Annual Report” category.
  • Nancy Steenburg and Elizabeth Kading received a 2007 APEX award in the "Feature Writing" category.
  • Peg Van Patten received a 2007 APEX award in the "One-of-a-Kind Print Publications" category.
  • Extension Director, Tessa L. Getchis, and the University of Connecticut Department of Extension, received the Northeast Extension Directors' Award of Excellence for 2006. She received this honor for her program, "Partnering to Streamline the Marine Aquaculture Permitting Process."

Delaware Sea Grant

  • Former Sea Grant staff members (and current University of Delaware employees), David Barczak, Tracey Bryant and Pamela Donnelly, were honored at the Delaware Press Association's 2007 Communications Contest awards banquet for communications and education products including, the "Dogfish Shark Model," "Horseshoe Crab: A Creature That Crawled Out of the Past" and "Seafood is Good for You!" brochures for Delaware Sea Grant.
  • Tracey Bryant also received one of three Sweepstakes Awards given at the banquet on the basis of total accumulated awards.
    Florida Sea Grant
  • Extension agent, Chuck Adams, received the Wachovia Professorship Award for distinguished service
    Georgia Sea Grant/North Carolina Sea Grant and partners
  • Georgia Sea Grant, North Carolina Sea Grant and their partners received the Coastal America Partnership Award for the "Aquatic Invaders" project (presented by Timothy R.E. Keeney, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere, U.S. Department of Commerce)
    Hawai‘i Sea Grant
  • The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) named Kuhio Beach in Waikiki is a winner of its 2008 Best Restored Beach Award. Dolan Eversole, University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program Coastal Geologist, spearheaded this project beginning in December 2006.
  • Sea Grant received two book awards from the Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association at its Ka Palapala Po‘okela ceremony. The winners (Natural Science category) were Reef and Shore Fishes of the Hawaiian Islands by Dr. John E. Randall, awarded top honor; and, Hawaiian Reef Plants by John M. Huisman, Isabella A. Abbott and Celia M. Smith, awarded honorable mention.

Georgia Sea Grant

  • Georgia Sea Grant, North Carolina Sea Grant and their partners received the Coastal America Partnership Award for the "Aquatic Invaders" project (presented by Timothy R.E. Keeney, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere, U.S. Department of Commerce)

Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant

  • Susan White received a 2008 APEX award in the “One of A Kind – Science & Environmental Publications” category. The award was for an exhibit based on the Nab the Aquatic Invader website. This award goes to Susan White and Jen Fackler, who were the masterminds behind the exhibit, and Dave Brenner, formerly of Michigan Sea Grant, who created the AIS characters that are key to the success of the exhibit and the website.

Louisiana Sea Grant

  • Louisiana Sea Grant Communications received a 2008 APEX award in the "Special Purpose Electronic & Video Publications" category.
  • Louisiana Sea Grant Communications received a 2007 APEX award in the "Special Purpose Electronic & Video" category.
  • Extension agents, Albert "Rusty" Gaude,' Kevin Savoie and Mark Schexnayder, received the 2006 Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea Grant Extension Network's Outstanding Group Achievement Award for their response and continuing recovery work following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
  • Mark Schexnayder also received the 2006 Conservation Educator of the Year Award in the 43rd Annual Governor's Conversation Achievement Recognition Program, conducted by the Louisiana Wildlife Federation.

Maryland Sea Grant

  • Erica Goldman received a 2008 APEX award in the “Science & Environmental Writing” category.
  • Michael W. Fincham received a 2008 APEX award in the "Magazine and Journal Writing” category.
  • Sandy Rodgers received a 2007 APEX award in the "Magazines and Journals (Print - up to 32 pages) category.
  • Jack Greer received a 2007 APEX award in the "Books & E-Books" category.
  • Jack Greer received a 2007 APEX award in the "Interviews & Personal Profiles" category.

Michigan Sea Grant

  • The Michigan Sea Grant communications team received three awards for two educational products: 1) an exhibit on lake sturgeon; and, 2) its Fins, Tails and Scales poster by the Association for Communication Excellence (ACE), and the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC).

Minnesota Sea Grant

  • Barb Liukkonen, Minnesota Sea Grant water resources education coordinator, and Nate Meyer and Wayne Seidel with U of MN Extension received the 2007 Award for Outstanding Extension Research from the Minnesota Community and Natural Resources Association (MCNRA) for their investigation of the "Impacts of Single-Day Youth Field Days." The award was presented at the MCNRA annual meeting in Brooklyn Center during October.
  • Cindy Hagley, environmental quality educator, and Jesse Schomberg, coastal communities educator, were honored by the Lake Superior Binational Forum for their work on the LakeSuperiorStreams.org Web site.
  • Jesse Shomberg received a 2007 APEX award in the "Design & Layout" category.

Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant

  • The program was awarded first place in radio public service announcements from more than 1,500 entries submitted by Clear Channel Radio stations for marine debris public service announcement

New Jersey Sea Grant

  • The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC) and its New Jersey Sea Grant College Program won the 2006 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award. The award recognizes outstanding environmental performance, programs and projects in the state. NJMSC was selected as the winner of the Healthy Ecosystem Award category for its Habitat Initiative.

North Carolina Sea Grant

  • Lisa Schiavinato, Sea Grant’s coastal law, planning and community development specialist, received an award from The Coastal Society that honors Robert Knecht, who shepherded the national coastal zone management efforts in the 1970s.   • The Coastwatch on North Carolina Now series received a 2008 APEX Award in the “Special Purpose Electronic & Video Publications” category. http://www.ncseagrant.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=news_item&id=482
    The project is a partnership with Sea Grant and UNC-TV, with the initial three segments funded by the NC State University Office of Extension, Engagement and Economic Development.
  • N.C. Sea Grant received the 2007 Natural Resources Agency of the Year Award as part of the 48th Annual Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards presented in February.

  • Ann Green, David Green, Arni Petersen received a 2007 APEX award in the "Education & Training Brochures, Manuals & Reports" category.
  • Coastal law, planning and policy specialist, Walter Clark received the Old North State Award for "dedication and service beyond expectation."
  • Walter Clark also received a certificate of appreciation from the North Carolina Senate, and recognition for his commitment to undergraduate education by North Carolina State University's First Year Inquiry Program.
  • The program received two communications awards from the N.C. Association of Government Information Officers: Coastwatch took first place for regular publications. Communicator, Ann Green won honorable mention for her Coastwatch story on harbor pilots.

Ohio Sea Grant

  • Ohio Sea Grant Communications received a 2008 APEX award in the “Feature Series Writing” category
  • Ohio Sea Grant Communications and Stone Laboratory received a 2008 APEX award in the “Most Improved Newsletter” category.
  • Communications (Designer Greg Aylsworth, Communications Intern Daniella Nordin, and Assistant Director Jill Jentes Banicki) received a 2007 APEX award in the "Feature Series Writing" category.
  • Director Jeff Reuter was appointed to the following: ORRAP Education Working Group; ORRAP Research to Applications Working Group; NOAA Science Advisory Board Extension, Outreach, and Education Working Group; Great Lakes Regional Research Information Network (GLRRIN)
  • Ohio Sea Grant Communications earned a first place award from the Association of Communications Excellence (ACE), an international association for agricultural communications.
  • Stone Laboratory's promotional 8-page brochure, tri-fold flyer, and three-part postcard series received a 2007 ACE Gold Award in the Publishing Direct Mail category.

Oregon Sea Grant

  • Robert E. Malouf received a 2008 APEX award in the “One of A Kind - Print Publications” category.

Pennsylvania Sea Grant

  • The program received Coastal Zone awards for work at Presque Isle and with habitat restoration
    Rhode Island Sea Grant
  • Malia Schwartz, Ph.D. received a 2008 APEX award in the “Magazines and Journals (Print) category.
  • Researchers Laura Skrobe and David Beutel (Sea Grant) worked with fishermen Jon Knight, Phil Ruhle Sr., Phil Ruhle Jr., and Jim O'Grady on a net called The Eliminator, which takes advantage of haddock's tendency to swim up when faced with a net, when other fish swim down. In November 2007, they were awarded the $30,000 grand prize in the World Wildlife Federation’s International Smart Gear Competition for their efforts.
  • Extension agent, Jen McCann and the Rhode Island Sea Grant/Coastal Resources Center/University of Rhode Island were featured in NOAA/EPA's outstanding case studies of Coastal Community Development (CCD).
  • Staff efforts led to unanimous passage of the Metro Bay Urban Coastal Greenway Policy Metro Bay Urban Coastal Greenway Policy (UCG).
    Texas Sea Grant
  • The Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission (GSMFC) elected Ralph Rayburn, associate director and extension program leader for Texas Sea Grant, as its chairman.

South Carolina

  • John H. Tibbetts received a 2008 APEX award in the "Magazines and Journals (Print) category
  • John H. Tibbetts received a 2007 APEX award in the "Magazines and Journals (Print - up to 32 pages) category
  • Coastal Heritage won two awards from the Society for Technical Communication for 2006-2007: Best of Show and Distinguished awards.
  • Coastal Heritage also won a 2006 Notable State Document Award from the South Carolina State Library. Only 10 of these awards are given each year,and they "recognize state governmental publications of outstanding merit and usefulness to the citizens of South Carolina."
  • Rick Huffman was named winner of the 2006 South Carolina Environmental Awareness Award for outstanding contributions toward the protection, conservation and improvement of South Carolina's natural resources.
