2009 SEA GRANT AWARDS
Alaska
Chuck Crapo Receives International Awards
Alaska Sea Grant seafood technology specialist, Chuck Crapo, has received
two prestigious international awards for his accomplishments in the seafood
industry. The Atlantic Fisheries Technology Conference bestowed the 2009
Earl P. McFee award on Crapo for his dedication to seafood science and
technology transfer to the public and industry. Crapo was also presented
with the International Association of Fish Inspectors Award for his exceptional
outreach and service to the industry.
Alaska Sea Grant Wins Apex Award
"Marine Habitat Mapping Technology" received an Award of Excellence
in the Web and Electronic Publications category. Congratulations to Sue
Keller and Jen Gunderson who produced the publication.
National Association of Government Communicators Blue Pencil and Gold
Screen Award
Sea Grant’s 2009 Coastal Calendar won in the calendar category.

California Sea Grant Wins Global Environmental Communications
Awards
The Award of Merit for Excellence in Environmental Communications went
to Joann Furse and Natalie Linton (editors) and Gwen Michael-Jones (designer)
for the publication, "San Diego Bay: A Story of Exploitation and
Restoration." The Award of Merit for Excellence in Environmental
Communications went to authors Carolynn Culver, Monique Myers, Sabrina
Drill, and editor Joann Furse for the publication, "Early Detection
Monitoring Manual for Quagga and Zebra Mussels".
Delaware
Delaware Sea Grant's Ed Whereat Named "Friend of the
Bays"
The Center for the Inland Bays presented its "Friend of the Bays"
award to Sea Grant water quality program coordinator, Ed Whereat at its
2009 annual volunteer recognition event. The award is given to an individual
or organization to recognize exemplary efforts to restore, conserve, and
protect Delaware’s Inland Bays. As background, in the late 1990s,
the University of Delaware’s Citizen Monitoring Program began to
flourish under the leadership and management of the Delaware Sea Grant
College Program. Ed Whereat was one of the key people responsible for
the growth and success of the program.

Illinois-Indiana
Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Awarded 2009 Education and Public
Service Award
Sea Grant received the award from the Universities Council on Water Resources
in recognition of individuals, groups or agencies that have made significant
contributions to increased public awareness of water resources development,
use or management. The program was recognized for efforts regarding natural
resource issues facing the greater Chicago metropolitan region, including
water supply.
Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Wins Apex Award
"Nab the Aquatic Invader! Playing Cards" received an Apex Award
for Publication Excellence in the One–of-a-Kind Environmental Publications
category. The award goes to Robin Goettel, Terri Hallesy, and Susan White,
along with Dave Brenner.
National Association of Environmental Professionals 2009 National
Environmental Excellence Award
Susan Boehme and colleagues at the U.S. EPA Great Lakes National Program
Office for their remediation project on the Tannery Bay/Wetland in Sault
Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Hawaii
Hawai'i Sea Grant Student Wins Benchmark Challenge
The inundation model developed by student, Yoshiki Yamazaki with Sea Grant
support won the 2009 Benchmark Challenge at the Inundation Science and
Engineering Cooperative Workshop in Oregon. Yoshiki's model provided the
best performance among more than 10 models examined at the workshop. These
include models from NOAA PMEL, USACE, and USGS as well as the commerical
package Delft3D. Yoshiki's work will influence the direction of inundation

Louisiana
Louisiana Sea Grant Receives Environmental Communication Award
The Louisiana Sea Grant communications office received a 2009 Eco Award
of Merit in Environmental Communications for its educational multimedia
CD “Marsh Mission.” The disc allows students to explore the
coastal marshland through the eyes of celebrated naturalist and photographer
CC Lockwood and acclaimed landscape painter Rhea Gary. The award is given
by Global Environmental Communications LLC.
Maine
Association for Communication Excellence Silver Award
Communications Coordinator, Catherine Schmitt received a silver award
for "A Coastal Companion: A Gulf of Maine Almanac, from Cape Cod
to Canada." Schmitt's work is a 176-page journey spanning 12 months
in the Gulf of Maine and its watershed. Press

Maryland Sea Grant Wins Apex Awards
Chesapeake Quarterly ("Renewing an Urban Watershed," with articles
by Erica Goldman) received an Award for Excellence in the Magazine Publishing
category. Congratulations to Erica.
The article "Shadow on the Chesapeake," by Jack Greer received
an Award for Excellence in the Scientific and Environmental Writing category.

Great Lakes Awards Extension/Outreach Network
Extension agent, Brandon Schroeder (MI SG) received an Early-Career Award.

Sonia Joseph (MI/GLERL) received the Outstanding Program Award (Outreach)
for Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB’S) in the Great Lakes: Awareness
and Action.
Minnesota
Minnesota Sea Grant Wins Apex Award
"Toward Sustainable Tourism" won a 2009 APEX award for publication
excellence in the one-of-a-kind scientific and environmental publications
category. APEX awards recognize achievements in graphic design, editorial
content, and overall communications quality.
Mississippi-Alabama
Kay Bruening Recognized for Outstanding Service
Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium Executive Support Associate
Kay Bruening was recognized Oct. 28 with an Outstanding Staff Award
from The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast for her role
in providing support to the university.
Chad Smith Student Travel Grant
Michael Stieber, a Sea Grant-funded graduate and an archaeologist, was
awarded for his presentation at the North American Society for Oceanic
History, Steamship Historical Society of America and National Maritime
Historical Society’s Annual Conference. His research on oral histories
of waterfront-related pursuits was based on filmed and recorded interviews
with fishermen and other seafood industry workers from Bayou La Batre,
Ala.
MIT
MIT Sea Grant 2009 Doherty Professorship in Ocean Utilization
Pierre Lermusiaux, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering’s Center for Ocean Engineering, will receive a supplemental
award of $25,000 per year for two years. Lermusiaux’s Doherty-funded
project aims to advance the concept of adaptive sampling using swarms
of smart autonomous underwater vehicles.
North Carolina
Coastwatch and Kathleen Angione Awarded First Place Honors
Coastwatch took top honors in the regular publications category
at the North Carolina Association of Government Information Officers
annual awards program.Congratulations to the communications team and
to the designer and printer. Kathleen Angione received first place for
feature writing for her story on Scott Baker's RecText project. That
project also will be featured at the Science Online international meeting
in January.
"Cooking With the Chefs" Earns International Honors
The 2008 Cooking With the Chefs program at the N.C. Seafood Festival
earned "gold" ranking in awards announced recently by the
International Festival & Events Association. The cooking demonstrations
featuring master chefs using local seafood were honored as best "event
within an event" among similar-size programs across the country
and abroad. Barry Nash, North Carolina Sea Grant seafood technology
and marketing specialist, assisted in organizing the chefs' program
modeled after popular television cooking shows.
North Carolina Sea Grant Wins Association of Zoos & Aquariums
(AZA) Award
Peggy Sloan, North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, was awarded Best
Overall Poster for "Aquatic Invaders: Testing the Efficacy of an
Outreach Toolkit."
North Carolina Sea Grant Wins Apex Award
Sea Grant was awarded an Apex award of excellence for improved Web sites.
Congratulations to Kathleen Angione and Matt Haught for working with
consultants from CapStrat to update the Sea Grant site.
NOAA Marine Sanctuaries "Volunteer of the Year"
Marine Education Specialist Terri Kirby-Hathaway, who holds the education
seat of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was honored
for helping to bring a change in attitudes and opinions concerning ocean
resources.
Specialist Wins State’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award
North Carolina Sea Grant Fisheries Specialist Bob Hines retired in June.
At a special reception in May, Hines was presented with one of the state's
highest honors for his work with the fishing community to reduce bycatch
and increase gear efficiency for targeted species.
New Jersey
New Jersey Sea Grant's Claire Antonucci Receives Award
New Jersey Sea Grant acting executive director and education leader,
Claire Antonucci received the Champion of the Ocean Award from Monmouth
University’s Urban Coast Institute. Ms. Antonucci was honored
for her 13 years as leader of the NJMSC’s education department.
Ohio
Great Lakes Awards Extension/Outreach Network
Extension agents Joe Lucente (OH SG) and Vickie Harris (WI SG) received
Mid-Career Awards.
Great Lakes Awards Extension/Outreach Network
The Superior Program Award (Outreach) was given to Colleen Wellington
and Dave Kelch, (OH SG) for the Ohio Clean Marinas Boat Shrink Wrap
Recycling Program.
Oregon
Oregon Sea Grant Wins Apex Award
"Hold that Thought: Questioning Five Common Assumptions about Communicating
with the Public," received an Apex Award of Excellence. The publication
was written by Joe Cone, edited by Rick Cooper, and designed by Patricia

Oregon Sea Grant Wins Eco Award from Global Environmental Communications
"On the Lookout for Aquatic Invaders" received an Award of
Excellence (first prize in the "Environmental Design and Illustration-Special
Publications" cateogry) in the 2009 ECO AWARDS®, "a competition
recognizing and honoring excellence in the environmental communications
field" sponsored by Global Environmental Communications, LLC. The
publication was developed by Scott Wiedemer and Sam Chan, edited by
Rick Cooper, and designed by Stefania Padalino and Patricia Andersson.
Four International Hermes Creative Awards
- "On the Lookout for Aquatic Invaders" won a Platinum
in the Design/Publication Overall category
- "Boats of the Oregon Coast" was awarded Platinum for
Publications/Handbook
- "Oregon Sea Grant Program Report 2007" earned a Gold
for Video/Internal Communication
- "Oregon Sea Grant Publications & Videos 2008" received
an Honorable Mention in Publications/Catalog.
The Hermes Creative Awards is “an international competition
for creative professionals involved in the concept, writing and design
of traditional and emerging media,” administered and judged
by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals.
This year’s competition attracted some 3,700 entries from around
the world.
South Carolina
"Coastal Heritage" Receives Awards
"Coastal Heritage," a quarterly publication, received five
awards in competitions during 2008-2009:
- Distinguished Award from the Society of Technical Communications
(STC) Carolina chapter competition; and, an Award of Excellence
from the STC international competition, based on content and organization,
copy-editing, visual design, and creativity.
- Award of Excellence in the Low-Budget Publications category in
the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Region
IV competition; and, an Award of Merit in the Other Magazines category.
- 2009 APEX Award of Excellence in the Magazines and Journals category.

Wisconsin Sea Grant Receives ECO Award of Excellence
ASC Communications Manager Stephen Wittman and Art Director Tina Yao
have been recognized with an ECO Award of Excellence in environmental
communications for their 2008 report, Climate Change in the Great
Lakes Region. The national award was one of ten presented by Global
Environmental Communications, LLC., an organization that supports
professional environmental communicators.
