National Sea Grant Office (NSGO)
NOAA Seeks New National Sea Grant College Program Director
The Agency conducted a national search to replace Director, Dr. Ronald C. Baird who retired in March. The position closed in February and applications are under review. Interviews will take place this spring. Until the position is filled, Leon Cammen is serving as Acting Director, and Jim Murray is serving as Acting Deputy Director.

National Sea Grant Review Panel
Two Sea Grant Review Panel Members Appointed to NOAA Science Advisory Board
Review Panel members Geraldine Knatz, executive director for the Port of Los Angeles, California and Frank Kudrna, chief executive officer of Kudrna & Associates, a Chicago engineering and consulting firm, now serve on NOAA’s Science Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB advises the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere on strategies for research, education and the application of science.

Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez Appoints Three New Panel Members
Appointed in March 2006 were: John V. Byrne, President Emeritus of Oregon State University (OSU), and former Administrator of NOAA. C. Barry Raleigh, Dean of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii; and William L. Stubblefield, retired Director of the Office of NOAA Corps Operations and former Executive Director of NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.

National Sea Grant Review Panel (NSGRP) and Sea Grant Association (SGA) Meetings Held March 6-7
The NSGRP held its spring meeting in Washington, DC. The Panel heard from Eric Webster, Director, NOAA Legislative Affairs and Dr. Rick Spinrad, Assistant Administrator for NOAA Research, who discussed the Sea Grant budget and the search process for a new Sea Grant Director. Timothy R.E. Keeney, NOAA Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere conducted a ceremony to swear in three new NSGRP members (see Panel news, above). The SGA held its meeting in Washington, DC, and also heard from Dr. Rick Spinrad, who emphasized the importance of forging partnerships with NOAA Research labs/offices and other Agency programs.

Law Center
Center Undergoes Review
On March 20-24, a Topical Advisory Team reviewed the National Sea Grant Law Center. The team was chaired by Jeff Stephan of the National Sea Grant Review Panel and included Richard Hildreth of the University of Oregon School of Law in Eugene, Oregon.
