DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

  • Sea Grant Association (SGA) Meeting
Last week, the SGA met in Easton, MD. The meeting was kicked off with a presentation from NOAA Administrator, Professor Jane Lubchenco. Lubchenco spoke to the SGA about the Agency's renewed emphasis on scientific research, improved technology and better analysis of data in order to protect waterways. She emphasized the need to forge strong bonds with the Sea Grant universities and reaffirmed our emphasis on climate change and the economic well-being of coastal communities.
  • Strategic Plan Alignment
As part of the planning process, state programs are required to align their planning documents with the 4-year National Sea Grant Plan. This week, the National Advisory Board committee with responsibility for reviewing the state Sea Grant Program alignment efforts met for the second time. The plans for most programs are either approved or require only minor revision. We anticipate getting the results of the review out by the end of October.
  • PIE Comments
Comments on the draft evaluation policy are due today, Friday, October 23. We anticipate finalizing the policy paper by the end of October. We will begin scheduling site visits starting in April 2010. All visits will be completed by July 2011. Programs will work with their Program Officers to schedule the site visits; we are hoping to plan two site visits each month.
  • Focus Team Meeting
Prior to last week’s Sea Grant Association Meeting, the Sustainable Coastal Development focus team met for a one-day workshop to review and synthesize the impacts reported in this year’s annual reports. Their preliminary report indicated that there were about a dozen powerful stories that could be drawn out of the more than 300 pages of impacts. They expect to have a final report by the end of the year.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Regional Plan Update
Three plans are complete (West Coast, Gulf of Maine, and Gulf of Mexico) and one is nearing completion (South Atlantic). You can download the plans or access more information about these plans on the National Sea Grant webpage: http://www.seagrant.noaa.gov/regional/. As more plans are completed, they will be updated on this page.
  • NOAA Climate Portal Opportunity
NOAA is working to develop a Climate Portal that is intended to serve as a "one-stop shop" for NOAA information about climate variability and change. The expected public release of the Climate Portal is January and there is a need for additional coastal climate material. Bottom line - this is a great opportunity for Sea Grant to showcase our climate-related work. There are five types of contributions we can make: Articles for Climate Watch Magazine; News Shorts; Trainings; Publications; Websites; Other resources (videos, images, etc.) The Coastal Climate group is interested in FY09 climate deliverables, as well as projects that will have FY10-11 deliverables. Sea Grant Knauss Fellow, Steven McMurray has compiled a list of ongoing climate projects. However, there may be additional content that your programs have recently completed or are in the process of completing. To fill this gap, and make a large Sea Grant presence on the Climate Portal, we would appreciate your help in identifying other projects that state programs may be working on. Please contact Steven McMurray (Steven.McMurray@noaa.gov) re. any climate-related projects you are working on.
  • NSGO Social Scientist Position
We are continuing our search for a social scientist. A new job announcement will be posted by the end of October.
  • Continuing Resolution (CR)
A CR is in effect under 2009 funding levels. There may be a budget by the end of October.
