DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

  • NOAA Coastal Integration Implementation Plan
This week, we will wrap-up the FY '10-11 Implementation Plan for NOAA's collaborative coastal efforts. The draft version highlights several Sea Grant climate activities, Gulf of Mexico engagement, regional research and planning, and the joint Regional Water Conference with Cooperative Extension scheduled for February 2010. I will send you a final version of the plan after its release.
  • Sea Grant Leadership Meeting
Last month, NSGO, SGA and Advisory Board leadership convened in Baltimore, MD. Topics for discussion included the importance of continued collaboration with NOAA's other coastal programs in order to provide the best service to our coastal stakeholders.
  • 2010 Sea Grant/Regional Team Climate Engagement
This week, I will meet with Laura Furgione (who has responsibility for NOAA's regional teams), to review the recommendations from the Executive Committee on Engagement for mini-grant funding. The submissions were impressive and have gained favorable attention within the Agency. Once we receive the FY '10 appropriation, we will release funding.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

  • State Department "Voice of America" (VOA) Meeting
Last week, NSGO and OAR Public Affairs staff met with representatives from the Broadcasting Board of Governors and State Department colleagues who produce editorials for "Voice of America"--100 million+ listeners in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. VOA produces two editorials per day for their 44 language services, and environmental topics are of high interest. By pitching Sea Grant news stories and accomplishments, we will be working to increase their environmental editorials. See a marine debris editorial online (mentioning Sea Grant) at http://www.voanews.com/uspolicy/2009-09-08-voa5.cfm. This promises to be the beginning of a good working relationship with VOA, which reaches large international audiences and covers issues important to NOAA.
  • NSGO Social Scientist Position
We are continuing our search for a social scientist. A new job announcement will be posted in mid-October.
  • Continuing Resolution (CR)
A CR is in effect under 2009 funding levels. There may be a budget by the end of October.
