DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

National Sea Grant Advisory Board Changes
At the Board's September meeting, Sea Grant welcomed new members, and bid farewell to colleagues who have long been a part of the Sea Grant family. Please welcome the following new members: Jeremy Harris, Honolulu, Hawaii; Michel Orbach, North Carolina; Harry Simmons, North Carolina; and, Richard H. Vortmann La Jolla, California. A forthcoming press release will provide further information about each new member. Departing are: Robert Duce, Peter Bell, Frank Kudrna, Jeffrey Stephan and Judith Weis. I would like to thank each for their service to Sea Grant.

  • "Google Ocean" Training Call: September 30th
    Background: Google is interested in soliciting stories and images from Sea Grant for its new ocean site. Much of the content you publish on your websites and in your newsletters is ideal for use on this site. For the next call (Wednesday, September 30th at 2 p.m. EDT), Google's Charlotte Vick, will lead us directly through Google Ocean, and then through The Deepness (the website through which content is provided to Google Ocean). You will need to be able to login to The Deepness site for the call on the 30th (and to provide content in the future), and to download Google 5.0 before the call. To register: Send your name, the call date you wish to join, and your e-mail address with subject line "Google Ocean" to Amy.Painter@noaa.gov

  • Smart Growth Guide for Coastal and Waterfront Communities Released
    On Wednesday, September 9, NOAA, EPA, the International City/County Management Association, and Rhode Island Sea Grant, released “Smart Growth for Coastal and Waterfront Communities.” Developed in consultation with the national Smart Growth Network, the interagency guide builds on the network’s ten smart growth principles to create coastal and waterfront-specific strategies for development. We are grateful to the Sea Grant communicators for providing images for the book.   • NOAA Sea Grant/Regional Collaboration Team Mini-Grant
    Eight proposals were submitted for this partnership opportunity, totaling $199,998. The Executive Committee on Engagement (ECE) will serve as the review panel for this competition. The projects will be reviewed on September 28, 2008. The role of the ECE will be to determine if the proposals met the minimum requirements and addressed the climate engagement priorities identified in the RFP. ECE comments will be provided to Leon Cammen and Laura Furgione, who will jointly make final decisions on project approval.
  • Knauss Fellows: Did You Know?
    Since 1979, 782 fellows have graduated from the Sea Grant Knauss Fellowship Program. The 782 figure includes this year's class (2009).

  • Helpful Hints for Completing Financial Form SF 425
    On line 10k of the form, please do not report more match than you proposed in your proposal. Line 10k must be zero, or it will be returned to you since the system will assume the Government owes the recipient money. For form box 11, the indirects must be filled out, if applicable.

  • Sustainable Coastal Development (SCD) National Focus Area Meeting and Workshop for Sea Grant Directors
    October 12 (Focus Team Meeting) - October 13 (SGA workshop), Tidewater Inn, Easton, MD
    The focus team will review program annual reports and strategic planning documents. On October 13th, team members will update Sea Grant directors on SCD activities and interact with potential federal partners for future work.
  • 33rd Annual Seafood Science & Technology (SST) Conference and National Focus Team Meeting
    October 26-28, 2009, New Orleans, LA
    The Sea Grant Safe and Sustainable Seafood Supply focus team will hold its annual meeting (October 28 - 30) in conjunction with the SST conference in order to take advantage of the discussions and aid the focus team with its future direction. In addition to current technology, seafood safety and product quality topics, the SST agenda includes a special, full day “State of the Union” program addressing the status of support for USA’s Domestic Fisheries and Seafood Industry. All concerned with the future of USA’s seafood industry from vessels and ponds to processing, retail and restaurants should attend.     The Sea Grant Climate Network invites members of the Sea Grant network to participate.   • Request for Proposals: FY 10 NOAA Climate Program Office Sector Applications Research Program (SARP)
    This competition will be announced soon. SARP funding is designed "to catalyze and support interdisciplinary applied research, outreach and education activities that enhance the capacity of key socio-economic sector and systems to respond to and plan for climate variability and change through the use of climate information and related decision support resources.   • Oregon and Maine Sea Grant Building a Resilient Coast DVD
    The DVD highlights some of the key issues and insights offered by a range of speakers knowledgeable about responding to the effects of climate change. Produced by Oregon Sea Grant as part of a joint project with Maine Sea Grant, the DVD is specifically intended to address the concerns and interests of Maine coastal residents as identified in preliminary focus groups and an extensive survey of public opinion and needs.

  • New York Sea Grant-Sponsored Great Lakes Seaway Trail Discovery Center Receives Scenic Byway Award
    The center received a 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Interpretation during the National Scenic Byways 2009 Conference in Denver, Colo., in August. The center's project has showcased the region's maritime heritage resources through exhibits, Web content, outdoor interpretive signage, an expert speaker series and the Dive the Seaway Trail project, run by New York Sea Grant, Oswego, which promotes scuba diving along the byway.
