Ohio Sea Grant to announce 2018 Harmful Algal Bloom forecast for Lake Erie on July 12

Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory will host a media briefing to announce NOAA’s 2018 Harmful Algal Bloom forecast for Lake Erie on Thursday, July 12. In addition to the official forecast, the event will feature spring nutrient loading and projections along with expert commentary and highlights of recent research efforts and successes.

Ohio State University and NOAA will also stream the event in a webinar for the press and public.

WHAT

Media briefing to include:

  • Lake Erie water sampling boat trip;
  • NOAA’s 2018 Lake Erie HABs forecast;
  • Discussion of the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative, known as HABRI;
  • A history of HABs in Lake Erie.

WHERE

Stone Laboratory, Gibraltar Island, Put-in-Bay, Ohio.

Reporters should take the Miller Ferry departing from Catawba Point at 9:30 a.m. Stone Lab staff will meet the ferry and take reporters to the lab.

An online webinar will also be available from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Media Briefing at Stone Lab and webinar
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Interviews with subject matter experts
  • 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Lunch and continued interviews
  • 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Two one-hour research cruise and photo opportunities (media may choose the 2 pm or 3 pm event during RSVP)
